FILIGRANA – Silver Filigree

with Liana Scarano

Let’s create a silver jewelry piece using the ancient filigree technique.

In the “FILIGRANA” workshop, we explain the fascinating world of filigree – an age-old technique still used today in jewelry making. The art of silver filigree is a significant craft in the Ladin valleys, particularly practiced in Cortina d’Ampezzo since the late 18th century. The incredible imitation of mountain flowers such as Edelweiss, anemones, and may-lilies of the valley decorated, and still decorates, buckles and brooches of traditional costumes.

Liana Scarano explains which tools and silver wires are used in filigree work and shows the different techniques needed to create these beautiful pieces of jewelry. Through a demonstration, we learn about the various filling techniques and see how, with precision and skill, wires and metal are transformed into extraordinarily beautiful jewelry.

In this workshop, we not only learn the basics of goldsmithing but also offer the opportunity to try the filigree technique ourselves. With various tools like metal wires, files, and other equipment, participants will be encouraged to create their own jewelry. They have the chance to be creative and transform their ideas into unique silver jewelry pieces.
